After Kalratri's dark night on Day 7, Navratri turns to its brightest form. On Durga Ashtami, devotees worship Maa Mahagauri, a goddess so radiant that her name itself means "extremely white," and the day becomes the busiest of the festival, with Kanya Pujan, Sandhi Puja and havans across homes and temples.

Who Is Maa Mahagauri? The Goddess of Purity

Devotees worship Mahagauri as the eighth of the Navdurga. Maha means great and gauri means fair or radiant, and every detail of her form speaks of purity and calm.

She wears only white and rides a white bull (Vrishabha), which gives her another name, Vrisharudha. In her four hands she holds a trishul and a damaru, and raises the other two in the gestures of fearlessness and blessing. Tradition describes her as eternally eight years old, which ties her closely to the young girls families honour in Kanya Pujan on her day.

Mahagauri ki Katha: How Parvati Became Gauri

The story begins with Parvati's long tapasya to win Shiva as her husband, the same penance honoured on Day 2 as Maa Brahmacharini. For years she meditated in the open, through scorching sun, rain and cold, until her body was covered in dust and her complexion had turned dark.

When Shiva finally accepted her, he bathed her in the waters of the Ganga. The dust and darkness washed away, and Parvati emerged glowing white, as radiant as the moon. From then on, devotees called her Mahagauri.

Another telling links her directly to the day before: after shedding her golden skin to become the dark Kalratri and destroy Raktabija, the Goddess regained her radiance as Mahagauri. Either way, her story is about purity restored after hardship, which is why devotees pray to her to wash away past mistakes.

Maa Mahagauri Mantra (with Meaning)

The most widely chanted Mahagauri mantra is short and easy to repeat through the day:

ॐ देवी महागौर्यै नमः॥

Om Devi Mahagauryai Namah

"Salutations to Goddess Mahagauri." Chant it 108 times during the Ashtami puja, or simply as you prepare for Kanya Pujan.

Mahagauri Mantra in Hindi: Dhyana and Beej Mantras

The dhyana mantra paints her exactly as she is worshipped:

श्वेते वृषे समारूढा श्वेताम्बरधरा शुचिः। महागौरी शुभं दद्यान्महादेवप्रमोददा॥

Shvete Vrishe Samarudha Shvetambaradhara Shuchih, Mahagauri Shubham Dadyan Mahadeva Pramodada

"Seated on a white bull, dressed in white, pure in every way: may Mahagauri, who brings joy to Mahadeva, grant what is auspicious."

If you're holding an Ashtami havan, chant the beej mantra ॐ ह्रीं महागौर्यै नमः स्वाहा (Om Hreem Mahagauryai Namah Swaha) with each ahuti.

Durga Ashtami: Why Day 8 Is the Peak of Navratri

For many families, Ashtami is the most important day of the festival. Three rituals come together on it.

  • Kanya Pujan. Families invite young girls home, usually nine of them aged between two and ten, and worship them as living forms of the Devi. They wash the girls' feet, apply tilak, tie a red thread on their wrists, feed them halwa, puri and chana, and send them off with small gifts. Since tradition describes Mahagauri herself as eight years old, Ashtami is an especially fitting day for it. Families who can't host the kanyas at home sometimes offer a Kanya Charan Pujan at a temple instead.
  • Sandhi Puja. Devotees perform it at the exact moment Ashtami ends and Navami begins, honouring the Goddess as Chamunda, who, according to legend, destroyed the demons Chanda and Munda at that very junction.
  • The Ashtami havan. Many households hold their main havan of Navratri on this day, before Kanya Pujan.

Maa Mahagauri Puja Vidhi on Navratri Day 8

Most families do the Ashtami puja in the morning, so Kanya Pujan can follow.

  1. Bathe early and wear clean clothes. Many devotees choose white or the day's colour.
  2. Continue the Navratri routine. Water the barley and refresh the kalash.
  3. Set up her picture. Place Maa Mahagauri's photo on a white cloth and offer white flowers, such as jasmine or mogra.
  4. Recite the dhyana mantra. Picture her on the white bull as you say "Shvete Vrishe Samarudha..."
  5. Chant her mantra. Recite "Om Devi Mahagauryai Namah" 108 times.
  6. Offer coconut as bhog, along with halwa, puri and chana prepared for the kanyas.
  7. Perform the havan, if you're doing one, with her beej mantra.
  8. Hold Kanya Pujan, then close with the aarti and share the prasad.

Maa Mahagauri Bhog and Colour

Offer Mahagauri a coconut. Rough on the outside and pure white within, it mirrors the story of a goddess washed clean, and many families break one during the Ashtami puja and hand the pieces to the kanyas as prasad. To see what every devi receives across the nine days, and why, read the Navratri bhog for 9 days list.

For Ashtami 2026, wear purple, a shade of dignity and devotion that suits the festival's biggest day. The full Navratri colours 2026 list shows where it sits among the nine.

Mahagauri Mata ki Aarti

Families sing the same Durga aarti all through Navratri, but on Ashtami it carries extra meaning, because its very first line calls out her name, Gauri:

जय अम्बे गौरी, मैया जय श्यामा गौरी। तुमको निशिदिन ध्यावत, हरि ब्रह्मा शिवरी॥

Jai Ambe Gauri, Maiya Jai Shyama Gauri, Tumko Nishidin Dhyavat, Hari Brahma Shivari.

"Victory to Mother Gauri, on whom Hari, Brahma and Shiva meditate day and night."

Day 8 at the Temples

At the rare Shri Yantra Mandir in Haridwar, temple Pandits mark Ashtami with a Shree Yantra Abhishek. At Kalighat in Kolkata, devotees seeking protection offer the Raksha Kavach Paath with a 1,008-ahuti havan.

Benefits of Worshipping Mahagauri Devi

  • A fresh start. Just as the Ganga washed her clean, devotees pray to her for release from past mistakes and a clear conscience.
  • Marital harmony. In this form Parvati was united with Shiva, so couples turn to her for a peaceful, loving marriage.
  • Calm and contentment. Her serene form is a focus for prayers for inner peace.
  • Fulfilment of wishes. Many believe Ashtami is one of the most powerful days of the year to have a prayer answered.

Ashtami, the Day the House Fills Up

Ashtami feels different from every other day of Navratri. The kitchen starts early with halwa and puri, little girls arrive in their best clothes, and the whole family gathers for Kanya Pujan. At the centre of it all is Mahagauri, the goddess whose story is about being washed clean after years of hardship. It's a fitting day to let go of whatever weighed on you this year and begin again.

If you'd like a Navratri puja performed at a temple on your behalf, Ekishwar can arrange it at a Shakti Peeth, in your name.
