About Prayer Beads
Prayer beads (mala) are used to count mantras during jaap and meditation. Ek Ishwar's malas include the 5 Mukhi Rudraksha Mala (108+1 beads), Tulsi, Sphatik (crystal) and lotus-seed (Padma Beej) malas, each traditionally associated with a different deity and practice.
Why does a mala have 108 beads?
108 is a sacred number in Hindu tradition, so one round of the mala counts 108 repetitions of a mantra. The extra bead, the sumeru or guru bead, marks the start and end of the round.
Which mala is used for which deity?
Rudraksha is traditionally used for Lord Shiva, Tulsi for Lord Vishnu and Shri Krishna, and Sphatik and lotus-seed malas for Maa Lakshmi. Follow your guru's or family's practice where you have one.
How should a mala be cared for?
Keep it in a clean pouch or box when not in use, and avoid chemicals and perfume on the beads.
