Diwali Date 2026 (Diwali Kab Hai): Full 5-Day Calendar from Dhanteras to Bhai Dooj

Diwali falls on Sunday, 8 November 2026. All five days from Dhanteras to Bhai Dooj, the tithi behind each date, and the Monday with no festival this year.

Diwali 2026 falls on Sunday, 8 November, when Kartik Amavasya covers the evening and families perform Lakshmi Puja after sunset. That is 19 days later than Diwali 2025, which fell on 20 October. The Amavasya tithi runs from 11:27 AM on 8 November to 12:31 PM on 9 November.

So, diwali kitne tarikh ko hai? Sunday, 8 November 2026. The festival starts with Dhanteras on Friday, 6 November. One thing is different in 2026: Govardhan Puja is not the day after Diwali. It falls on Tuesday, 10 November, and Bhai Dooj on Wednesday, 11 November.

These are the Diwali dates 2026 for every day of the festival, with the tithi that decides each one. Dates are for India; families in the US and Canada often observe Govardhan Puja and Bhai Dooj a day earlier because the tithi meets sunrise on a different calendar day there.

Each festival has its own guide: the Dhanteras puja vidhi, the Chhoti Diwali date and diya count, and the Diwali puja time city by city for 8 November.

Why Monday, 9 November Has No Festival in 2026

Hindu festivals follow the tithi, and most take the tithi that stands at sunrise (udaya tithi). In 2026 the Amavasya that begins at 11:27 AM on 8 November is still running at sunrise on 9 November, and it only ends at 12:31 PM that day. So 9 November counts as Amavasya, not Pratipada.

Govardhan Puja needs Pratipada at sunrise. That first happens on Tuesday, 10 November, with Pratipada lasting until about 2:00 PM. The same shift carries Bhai Dooj, which needs Dwitiya, to Wednesday, 11 November.

This is why you will see two versions of the calendar online. Pages built on a US or Canadian location show 9 and 10 November, because sunrise there falls at a different moment of the same tithi. For India, 10 and 11 November hold.

Learn more: is Diwali on 7 or 8 November?

Diwali is on 8 November. The confusion comes from Narak Chaturdashi: Chaturdashi covers the evening of 7 November, so families light Chhoti Diwali diyas that night, while its pre-dawn bath falls on the morning of 8 November.

Badi Diwali vs Chhoti Diwali: Which Day Is Which?

When people ask badi Diwali kab hai, they mean the main night of Lakshmi Puja: Sunday, 8 November 2026. Chhoti Diwali comes the evening before, on Saturday, 7 November.

The two nights carry different jobs. Chhoti Diwali clears the way: homes light diyas to mark Krishna's victory over Narakasura, and many families light a lamp facing south for Yama. Badi Diwali marks Ram's return to Ayodhya, when the city lit lamps to welcome him: the house is clean, the doorway lit, and Lakshmi and Ganesh are worshipped after dusk.

What changes if you live in Bengal or Odisha?

In Bengal, Assam and Odisha, the same Amavasya night of 8 November belongs to Kali Puja, and Lakshmi was worshipped earlier at Kojagari Purnima. The date stays the same; the deity at the centre of the night changes.

Why Diwali Falls So Late in 2026

Diwali usually moves about 11 days earlier each year, because 12 lunar months add up to roughly 354 days, not 365. Left alone, that drift would carry Diwali into the monsoon within a few decades.

The calendar corrects itself by adding an extra lunar month every two to three years. 2026 is one of those years: Adhik Jyeshtha ran from 17 May to 15 June 2026. That one extra month pushed every festival after June about 30 days later, which more than cancels the usual 11-day slide.

You may have noticed the shift already. Pitru Paksha 2026 began later than in 2025, and Shardiya Navratri moved too, so the Navratri colours 2026 ran through October rather than late September. Diwali follows the same pattern.

Govardhan Puja and Bhai Dooj 2026 Dates

Govardhan Puja falls on Tuesday, 10 November 2026. Pratipada begins at 12:31 PM on 9 November and holds at sunrise only on 10 November, so morning worship and the Annakut belong to that Tuesday.

Annakut means a mountain of food: households and temples arrange dozens of dishes before Krishna, recalling the day he lifted Govardhan Hill to shelter Braj. If your family kept the day-wise Navratri bhog during Shardiya Navratri in October 2026, think of Annakut as the opposite approach: not one offering a day, but everything at once.

Bhai Dooj 2026

Most panchangs list Bhai Dooj on Wednesday, 11 November 2026, when Dwitiya stands through the afternoon. Some calendars mark 10 November instead, because Dwitiya begins at about 2:00 PM that day. Check your family's panchang or local temple if the tilak timing matters to you.

Planning Your Week from 6 to 11 November

The calendar gives you a natural order. Most of the work happens before the main night, not on it.

  • By Thursday, 5 November: finish the deep clean. Tradition holds that Lakshmi enters a clean, well-lit home, and Dhanteras evening is the traditional start of buying and lighting.
  • Friday, 6 November (Dhanteras): buy what you need for the puja and light the first diya at the entrance.
  • Saturday, 7 November (Chhoti Diwali): set up the puja chowki, lay out the samagri, and light the evening diyas.
  • Sunday, 8 November (Diwali): keep the afternoon free so the puja starts on time once Pradosh Kaal begins.
  • Tuesday, 10 and Wednesday, 11 November: Govardhan Puja and Bhai Dooj close the festival.

The step people leave latest is the samagri, and it is the one that causes the most stress on the day itself. Ekishwar's Shree Mahalaxmi Puja Kosh brings the Lakshmi Puja essentials together in one box, and the Dhanlakshmi Box suits families who want something to keep in the puja space after Diwali. You can see the full range in the Diwali puja collection, and the Diwali puja samagri list covers every item if you prefer to gather them yourself.

Plan Diwali 2026 Around the Tithis, Not Just the Date

The main date is the easy part. The gaps between the days are what catch families out, and 2026 has two: a Monday with no festival, and a Govardhan Puja that comes two days after Diwali instead of one. Plan the shopping, cleaning and puja setup around those, and the main night has no last-minute rush.
