Dhanteras Puja Vidhi 2026: How to Do Dhanteras Puja at Home with Muhurat and Samagri List
Dhanteras falls on Friday, 6 November 2026. The puja muhurat by city, the samagri list and a step-by-step vidhi for Dhanvantari, Lakshmi-Kuber and Yam Deepdan.
Dhanteras 2026 falls on Friday, 6 November. Most Diwali-week rituals ask you to honour one deity; Dhanteras asks for three in a single evening. Dhanvantari, the physician of the gods, is worshipped for health. Lakshmi and Kuber come next, for wealth that stays. Last, after the puja, a lamp goes outside the main door for Yama.
The timing matters as much as the order. Trayodashi tithi begins at 10:30 AM on 6 November and ends at 10:47 AM on 7 November. Shopping can start any time after 10:30 AM, but the puja waits for the evening.
| Dhanteras 2026 | Timing (New Delhi) |
|---|---|
| Date | Friday, 6 November 2026 |
| Trayodashi tithi | 10:30 AM, 6 Nov to 10:47 AM, 7 Nov |
| Pradosh Kaal | 5:33 PM to 8:09 PM |
| Dhanteras puja muhurat (Vrishabha Kaal) | 6:02 PM to 7:57 PM |
| Yam Deepdan | After the puja, 6 November evening |
Dhanteras 2026 Date and Puja Muhurat: Why 6 November
Trayodashi stretches across two calendar days in 2026, so it is fair to ask why Dhanteras sits on 6 November and not 7 November. The answer is the evening. Dhanteras puja needs Trayodashi during Pradosh Kaal, the window that opens at sunset. On 6 November, Trayodashi covers the whole evening. By sunset on 7 November it has already ended, and Chaturdashi has taken over.
That gives Dhanteras two separate windows. The buying window runs from 10:30 AM on 6 November to 10:47 AM on 7 November. The puja window is narrower: Vrishabha Kaal, a fixed (sthir) lagna inside Pradosh Kaal. Tradition holds that wealth welcomed in a fixed lagna stays put, which is why panchangs single out this slot.
Dhanteras puja muhurat by city
Vrishabha Kaal shifts with local sunset, so the Dhanteras puja time changes from city to city on 6 November 2026.
| City | Dhanteras puja muhurat |
|---|---|
| New Delhi | 6:02 PM to 7:57 PM |
| Mumbai | 6:35 PM to 8:35 PM |
| Pune | 6:32 PM to 8:31 PM |
| Chennai | 6:14 PM to 8:10 PM |
What Is Dhantrayodashi? Dhanvantari, Lakshmi-Kuber and Yama
The name holds the clue: Dhan (wealth) on Trayodashi (the 13th lunar day) of Kartik Krishna Paksha. But the oldest reason for the day is health, not money. During the Samudra Manthan, Dhanvantari rose from the ocean on this Trayodashi carrying the pot of amrit, which is why Ayurveda practitioners still mark Dhantrayodashi as Dhanvantari Jayanti.
Lakshmi and Kuber enter the evening as a pair with different jobs. Lakshmi brings prosperity; Kuber, the treasurer of the gods, guards it. Families worship them together so that what comes in also stays.
Yama's place is less obvious and comes from a story about King Hima's son. Astrologers had predicted the prince would die of a snakebite on the fourth night of his marriage. That night his wife piled her gold and silver at the doorway, lit lamps all around and kept him awake with songs and stories. When Yama arrived as a serpent, the glare of the lamps and metal stopped him at the threshold, and he left at dawn without taking the prince. The story does not say Yama was defeated, only that he was kept outside, which is why the Dhanteras lamp for him stands at the door and not in the puja room.
Dhanteras Puja Samagri List
Dhanteras needs less than the main Diwali puja, but a few items are specific to this evening. Gather these by the afternoon of 6 November.
| For | Samagri |
|---|---|
| Setting up | Wooden chowki, red or yellow cloth, kalash with water, mango leaves, a coconut |
| Dhanvantari puja | Picture or idol of Dhanvantari, tulsi leaves, a small bowl of jaggery or kheer |
| Lakshmi-Kuber puja | Lakshmi and Ganesh idols, a Kuber picture or yantra, silver coins, roli, haldi, akshat (unbroken rice), lotus or marigold flowers |
| Offerings | Whole coriander seeds, batashe, sweets, fruit, paan and supari |
| Lighting | 13 clay diyas, ghee, cotton wicks, dhoop and agarbatti |
| Yam Deepdan | One four-wick diya (clay or wheat-flour dough), mustard oil |

The full Diwali puja samagri list, for the Lakshmi Puja on 8 November, covers the bigger setup, so keep what you buy for Dhanteras within reach rather than packing it away.
Dhanteras Puja Vidhi at Home: Step by Step
Start setting up about 30 minutes before the muhurat, so the puja itself begins inside Vrishabha Kaal (6:02 PM in Delhi). Face east or north while you sit.
- Sankalp. Bathe, wear clean clothes and sit before the chowki. Hold water, akshat and a flower in your right hand, say your name, gotra and the date (Kartik Krishna Trayodashi, 6 November 2026), and state the intention of the puja. Release the water onto the ground.
- Ganesh first. Offer roli, akshat and a flower to Ganesh and chant Om Gan Ganapataye Namah 11 times. Every puja on this evening starts here.
- Dhanvantari puja. Place tulsi leaves before Dhanvantari's picture, offer the jaggery or kheer, and chant Om Shri Dhanvantaraye Namah 108 times. Ask for health for everyone in the house by name.
- Lakshmi-Kuber puja. Set the day's new purchase and the silver coins before Lakshmi. Apply roli and haldi, offer akshat, lotus or marigold, and coriander seeds. Chant the Lakshmi and Kuber mantras below.
- Dhoop and diyas. Light the ghee diya before Lakshmi first, then the dhoop, then the 13 diyas around the home. For the dhoop, Shubh Saurabhya dhoop cones, dhoop sticks or incense sticks all suit a Dhanteras evening.
- Naivedya. Offer batashe, sweets, fruit, paan and supari. Dhanteras bhog stays simple; unlike the day-wise Navratri bhog, one sweet offering is enough.
- Aarti. Perform the Lakshmi aarti with the ghee diya, moving it clockwise, while the family sings.
- Kshama prarthana. Fold your hands and ask forgiveness for any mistakes in the puja. Then step outside for the Yam Deepdan.

Learn more: can you do the Dhanteras puja without a pandit?
Yes. Dhanteras is a household puja, and every step above can be done by any family member. Keep the sankalp in your own words if you don't know the Sanskrit.
Yam Deepdan on Dhanteras: Where and How to Light the Diya
The Yam Deepdan is the last ritual of the Dhanteras evening and the one most families get slightly wrong. The lamp is not for the puja room. It goes outside.
- Make the diya. Use a clay diya or shape one from wheat-flour dough. Give it four wicks pointing in four directions, and fill it with mustard oil, not ghee.
- Place it at the main door. Set it on the ground just outside the entrance, with the lamp facing south, the direction associated with Yama. Some families rest it on a small heap of grain.
- Light it and offer the mantra. Chant once: Mrityuna pashadandabhyam kalena shyamaya saha, trayodashyam deepadanat suryajah priyatam mama. It asks Yama, the son of Surya, to accept the lamp and keep untimely death away.
- Walk back in. Leave the lamp to burn out on its own. Many households follow the custom of not looking back at it once it is lit.
Dhanteras Puja Mantras
Each deity on Dhanteras has its own mantra. Chant them in the order of the vidhi, at the step where that deity is worshipped.
| For | Mantra | Count |
|---|---|---|
| Kuber | ॐ यक्षाय कुबेराय वैश्रवणाय धनधान्याधिपतये धनधान्यसमृद्धिं मे देहि दापय स्वाहा · Om Yakshaya Kuberaya Vaishravanaya Dhanadhanyadhipataye Dhanadhanya Samriddhim Me Dehi Dapaya Svaha | 11 |
The Kuber mantra addresses him by three names (Yaksha, Kuber, Vaishravana) and asks the lord of wealth and grain for a full store of both. The Lakshmi mantra centres on Shreem, her bija (seed) syllable.
Three Deities, One Evening: Getting the Dhanteras Order Right
Dhanteras rewards a little planning more than elaborate samagri. Shop in the morning or afternoon of 6 November, set up before 6:00 PM, and keep the sequence in mind: Dhanvantari for health, then Lakshmi and Kuber for wealth, then the lamp at the door for Yama. The order follows a simple logic, since a household needs to be well before it can prosper, and needs both before it can be protected. Get that sequence and the Vrishabha Kaal right, and the rest of the evening falls into place.
