Navratri Havan Vidhi and Navratri Havan Mantra (in Hindi)

The havan mantra for each of the nine devis in English and Hindi, the samagri you need, and the step-by-step order a Navratri havan at home follows.

A havan is the one Navratri ritual most people have watched but never actually performed themselves. The fire, the mantras, the final "swaha" with each offering, feel like they belong to a pandit, not a home puja.

They don't have to. Here's the mantra for each of the nine devis, the samagri you'll need, and the order the havan actually follows.

Each day's havan uses that day's devi mantra, chanted with each ahuti offered into the fire.

DayDeviBeej Mantra
1ShailputriOm Hreem Shivayai Namah Swaha
2BrahmachariniOm Aim Namah Swaha
3ChandraghantaOm Aim Hreem Shri Chandraghantayai Namah Swaha
4KushmandaOm Balayai Namah Swaha
5SkandamataOm Hreem Kleem Shrim Devi Skandamatayai Namah Swaha
6KatyayaniOm Hreem Katyayanyai Namah Swaha
7KalratriOm Hreem Kraam Kreem Kraum Kaalratriyai Namah Swaha
8MahagauriOm Hreem Mahagauryai Namah Swaha
9SiddhidatriOm Hreem Kleem Aim Siddhidatryai Namah Swaha

The closing mantra chanted through the whole havan, with every ahuti, is simply "Om Swaha," offered into the fire with ghee, til or samidha (sacred wood).

हर आहुति के साथ मंत्र के अंत में "स्वाहा" बोला जाता है, जो यह दर्शाता है कि अर्पण पूरी तरह से समर्पित किया जा रहा है।

  1. Prepare the havan kund. A small brass or clay havan kund works for a home puja; even a wide, heatproof plate lined with sand is enough.
  2. Arrange the samagri nearby. Keep havan samagri, ghee, a matchbox and the day's mantra within easy reach before lighting the fire.
  3. Light the fire. Use dry wood (samidha) or coconut husk, and let it catch properly before offering anything.
  4. Invoke Ganesh ji first. Offer the first few ahutis to Ganesh ji, asking for an obstacle-free puja, before moving to the day's devi.
  5. Offer ahutis with the day's mantra. Add a small spoon of ghee, til or havan samagri to the fire with each mantra, ending every offering with "swaha." A common count is 108 ahutis, though any heartfelt number is accepted.
  6. Close with a Purnahuti. The final, larger offering, usually with a coconut, marks the end of the havan.
  7. Let the fire burn out naturally. Don't extinguish it forcefully; let it die down on its own once the havan is complete.

Those observing Navratri this week might recognise this structure from the Maa Shailputri havan on Day 1, or the Navgrah Havan for Day 2, both performed by temple Pandits following this same order.

Learn more: ready-made havan samagri vs. assembling your own

Loose havan samagri (a mix of herbs, grains and sandalwood) is sold ready-made at most puja stores, which is far simpler than sourcing each ingredient separately. A pre-mixed packet is enough for a home havan, and kits like the Durga Mahotsav Box bundle the samagri together with other Navratri essentials in one order. The elaborate, ingredient-by-ingredient samagri is really only necessary for a large-scale temple yagna.

When to Do Navratri Havan

A havan can technically be performed on any day of Navratri, since each devi has her own mantra to offer it with. In practice, most households keep it to one or two days rather than all nine.

Ashtami and Navami are the most common choices. Ashtami marks Maa Mahagauri's day and is widely observed with a havan before Kanya Pujan. Navami, the final day, is when many families do their main havan of the festival, often alongside 9 Kanya Pujan, since both mark the completion of the nine-day worship.

For those who can't host a havan and Kanya Pujan together at home, Ekishwar offers a Nav Devi Manokamna Nariyal & Kanya Charan Pujan chadhawa, where this Navami ritual is completed at the temple in your name: see the Kanya Charan Pujan chadhawa.

Frequently asked questions

What is the Navratri havan mantra for each day?
Each day uses that devi's own beej mantra, ending in "swaha." The full nine-day list is above, in both English and Hindi.
What is the Navratri havan vidhi?
Light the havan kund, invoke Ganesh ji first, offer ahutis with the day's mantra ending in "swaha," close with a Purnahuti, then let the fire burn out on its own. Full steps are above.
What samagri is needed for a Navratri havan?
A havan kund, dry wood or coconut husk, ghee, til, havan samagri and a coconut for the Purnahuti cover the essentials.
Should havan be done on Ashtami or Navami?
Either is accepted. Ashtami is more common before Kanya Pujan on that day, while Navami's havan often marks the close of the full festival.
How many ahutis should be offered in a Navratri havan?
108 is the most common count, though any number offered with sincerity is considered complete.
Can havan be performed without a priest?
Yes, a home havan can be performed by any family member. If you'd prefer it done by a priest at a temple, that's also a common and accepted option.
