Shardiya Navratri 2026 begins on Sunday, 11 October. According to Drik Panchang and PanchangBodh, the Ghatasthapana muhurat for New Delhi is:

MuhuratTiming (New Delhi, 11 October 2026)
Pratahkal (morning) muhurat6:19 AM to 10:12 AM
Abhijit muhurat (midday alternative)11:44 AM to 12:31 PM
Learn more: what if I miss the morning window?

If the pratahkal window isn't possible, Ghatasthapana can be done during the Abhijit muhurat around midday instead. Both windows shift slightly with sunrise, so it's worth checking the timing for your own city on a local panchang before you begin.

Ghatasthapana is avoided during the night and during Amavasya, which is why both muhurats fall within daylight hours on Pratipada tithi.

  1. Clean the puja space. Wash the area where the kalash and murti will sit, and place a small wooden chowki there.
  2. Prepare the kalash. Fill it with clean water (Ganga jal if available), add a few grains of akshat, a coin, and some supari inside.
  3. Place the mango leaves and coconut. Arrange five mango leaves around the rim of the kalash, and set a coconut wrapped in a red cloth on top.
  4. Sow the barley. In a wide mud pot filled with soil, sow the barley seeds separately from the kalash, and water it lightly. This is watered daily through the nine days.
  5. Install the kalash. Place the prepared kalash near the murti or photo of the Devi, usually to its right.
  6. Light the diya and offer prayers. Light a diya with ghee or oil, offer flowers, akshat, sindoor and incense, and recite the Devi's mantra or a simple prayer.
  7. Offer the day's bhog. Offer whatever bhog you've prepared, and distribute it as prasad once the puja is complete.
  8. Repeat daily. From Day 2 onward, the daily puja is a shorter version of this: diya, flowers, incense and that day's bhog, along with watering the barley.

Many households also choose to sponsor a mantra havan or full anushthan at a Shakti Peeth on one or more days, in addition to the puja at home.

Day 1 carries extra steps beyond the daily puja, since this is when Navratri formally begins.

Before Ghatasthapana

Bathe and wear clean clothes. Clean the puja space and gather all the samagri listed above, so you aren't searching for anything once the muhurat window opens.

During Ghatasthapana

Follow the kalash installation steps above within the pratahkal or Abhijit muhurat. Take a sankalp, a short vow stating your name, gotra and the intention behind observing Navratri, before starting the main puja.

After Ghatasthapana

Invoke Maa Shailputri, the first of the Nav Durga, with her mantra and a simple aarti. Keep the diya (akhand jyot, if you're lighting one) burning safely through the day.

Those observing Day 1 at a Shakti Peeth rather than only at home often mark it with a Shailputri havan performed in their name.

Simple Navratri Puja at Home for Beginners

If the full samagri list feels like a lot, a simple Navratri puja at home needs only four things: a photo of the Devi, a diya, flowers or akshat, and whatever bhog you can manage that day.

  1. Place the photo on a clean surface.
  2. Light the diya.
  3. Offer flowers or akshat and say the Devi's name with devotion.
  4. Offer the day's bhog, then share it as prasad.

This simplified version is just as valid as the full vidhi. What matters most is doing it with sincerity, every day you can.

If You Can't Do the Full Puja at Home

Work, travel or simply not having the right space can get in the way of the full nine-day ritual, and that's alright. Ekishwar performs Navratri pujas at Shakti Peeths and Devi temples across India, in your name and gotra, so the worship still reaches the Devi even when you can't be there yourself.
