The chowki, the kalash and the thali: set them up before sunset on 8 November, and the puja can begin the moment the muhurat opens.

Diwali Puja Samagri List 2026: Complete Diwali Puja Items List for Lakshmi Puja at Home

Lakshmi Puja falls on Sunday, 8 November 2026. Every samagri item grouped by when you use it, with Hindi names, the chowki setup and what you can skip.

Lakshmi Puja on Sunday, 8 November 2026 begins at dusk, and the samagri decides how calm that hour feels. Most families know the big items: idols, diyas, sweets. The puja usually stalls on the small ones, like the moli thread, the paan leaves or the kalash's coconut, remembered only once the diya is already lit.

Sorting the samagri by when it is used, rather than keeping one long list, solves most of that. It shows what goes on the chowki before you sit, what you need in hand during the puja, and what can wait for the aarti.

If you are ordering samagri online, place the order by Thursday, 5 November, so it arrives before the Lakshmi Puja.

Cotton wicksरुई की बत्तीRound wicks for the diyas, long wicks for aarti
Dhoop and agarbattiधूप, अगरबत्तीOffered after the shodashopachar steps, before the aarti
CamphorकपूरFor the final aarti
Aarti thali and bellआरती थाली, घंटीFor the aarti itself

Dhoop and agarbatti do different jobs on Diwali night, which is why most families keep both:

  • Incense sticks burn slowly and steadily. Light one when you sit for the puja and let it run through the shodashopachar steps.
  • Dhoop cones release a thicker fragrance quickly. They suit the dhoop offering itself, the step just before the aarti.
  • Dhoop sticks sit between the two. Once the diyas are lit, place them in the other rooms, so the fragrance follows the light through the house.

Using one fragrance in all three forms keeps the puja room and the rest of the house in step. Ekishwar's Yagna range comes as dhoop cones, dhoop sticks and incense sticks, or all three together in the Yagna combo pack.

Lakshmi Ganesh Murti and Chowki Setup

The setup takes about 20 minutes and is worth finishing before sunset on 8 November, so the puja can start the moment the muhurat opens.

  1. Place the chowki in the north-east of the room or the puja space, so that you face east or north while sitting before it.
  2. Cover it with red cloth and draw a small swastik or an eight-petal ashtadal with rice where the idols will sit.
  3. Seat Ganesh and Lakshmi. Most families place Ganesh on the left and Lakshmi on the right, as you face the chowki. Choose a seated Lakshmi, not a standing one; a seated Lakshmi is believed to stay.
  4. Set the kalash on its heap of rice to the right of the idols, with water, a coin and supari inside, mango leaves in its mouth, and the coconut on top.
  5. Light the akhand diya in front of Lakshmi, on a small plate of rice so it stays steady through the night.
  6. Keep the rest within reach: the puja thali with roli, akshat and flowers on your right, and the bhog covered until the naivedya step.
Learn more: should you buy new Lakshmi Ganesh idols every Diwali?

Many families do, and immerse or respectfully store the old clay idols afterwards. Metal or stone idols that are already worshipped daily don't need replacing; clean them and use them again.

The Diwali puja vidhi, step by step, picks up from here once the setup is done.

Samagri You Can Skip or Substitute, and What You Can't

A full list can look longer than it needs to be. A complete Lakshmi Puja rests on a short core, and most other items have a simple substitute.

Keep these, without substitutes: an idol or picture of Lakshmi and Ganesh, a ghee diya, roli and akshat, fresh flowers, a kalash or lota of water, and one sweet as bhog. With these alone the puja is complete.

If you don't haveUse instead
LotusRed roses or marigold
PanchamritRaw milk with a tulsi leaf
GangajalClean water with a few tulsi leaves
Silver coinsAny coin set aside only for puja
Kamal gattaSkip it; it is customary, not required
KheelBatashe alone
Dry fruits, attarOptional; leave them out

Ready-Made Diwali Puja Kit or Buying Items Separately?

Both work. The right choice depends on how much of the samagri you already have at home and how much time you have before 8 November.

Buying separatelyA ready-made puja kit
Best forFamilies with a set routine and part of the samagri already at homeFirst Diwali in a new home, small families, anyone short on time

FlexibilityChoose every brand and quantity yourselfFixed contents, with fresh items such as flowers and sweets added at home

If a kit suits you, Ekishwar offers two for Lakshmi worship. The Shree Mahalaxmi Puja Kosh brings together 21 essentials for a simple home puja. The Dhanlakshmi Box is the fuller choice, with 51 items. Either way, you will still add fresh flowers, sweets and fruit on the day.

Six Essentials, the Rest Optional: Planning Your Diwali Puja Samagri

The Diwali puja samagri list looks long because it covers every step, but the puja itself rests on six things: the idols, a ghee diya, roli and akshat, flowers, water in a kalash, and a sweet. Everything else adds to the shodashopachar and can be swapped or left out. Buy by group, set the chowki before sunset, and keep the thali within reach, and the samagri stops being the thing you think about during the Lakshmi Puja.
