The hands of an elderly woman, a man with a red moli thread on his wrist and a small child pass over the flames of a five-wick ghee diya on a brass aarti thali, before a brass Lakshmi idol on a red-draped chowki lined with clay diyas and marigolds
After the last verse the thali goes round the family, and each person draws the flame's warmth to their eyes and forehead.

Lakshmi Aarti Lyrics with Meaning (Om Jai Lakshmi Mata): The Traditional Diwali Aarti

All eight verses of Om Jai Lakshmi Mata in Hindi and English letters, what each one means, and how to perform the aarti on Diwali night, 8 November 2026.

Ek IshwarPublished · 6 min read

On Diwali night, once the Lakshmi Puja is done, households across North India sing the same eight verses. Om Jai Lakshmi Mata is sung to the same tune as Om Jai Jagdish Hare, so even people who don't know the words can join from the second line. Most families know it by sound rather than meaning, and the verses say more than the familiar refrain suggests: they name Lakshmi as the mother of the world, the one who makes yajna possible, and the source of the fourteen jewels from the churning of the ocean.

The full Lakshmi aarti lyrics are below in Hindi and in English letters, followed by the meaning of each verse.

Lakshmi Aarti Lyrics in English (Transliteration)

Here is the same aarti written in English letters, for anyone who doesn't read Devanagari. The words stay in Hindi; only the script changes. Repeat the refrain, Om Jai Lakshmi Mata, after every verse.

Om Jai Lakshmi Mata, Maiya Jai Lakshmi Mata,
Tumko nishidin sevat, Hari Vishnu Vidhata.

Om Jai Lakshmi Mata.

Uma, Rama, Brahmani, tum hi jag-mata,
Surya-Chandrama dhyavat, Narad rishi gata.

Durga roop niranjani, sukh sampatti data,
Jo koi tumko dhyavat, riddhi-siddhi dhan pata.

Tum patal-nivasini, tum hi shubhdata,
Karma-prabhav-prakashini, bhavnidhi ki trata.

Jis ghar mein tum rahtin, sab sadgun aata,
Sab sambhav ho jata, man nahin ghabrata.

Tum bin yagya na hote, vastra na koi pata,
Khan-paan ka vaibhav, sab tumse aata.

Shubh-gun mandir sundar, kshirodadhi-jata,
Ratna chaturdash tum bin, koi nahin pata.

Mahalakshmi ji ki aarti, jo koi jan gata,
Ur anand samata, paap utar jata.

Lakshmi Mata Ki Aarti Meaning, Verse by Verse

VerseMeaning
Om Jai Lakshmi Mata…Victory to you, Mother Lakshmi. Day and night, Vishnu and Brahma (Vidhata, the creator) serve you.
Uma, Rama, Brahmani…You are Uma (Parvati), Rama (Lakshmi) and Brahmani (Saraswati), the mother of the whole world. The sun and moon meditate on you, and the sage Narad sings your praise.
Durga roop niranjani…In the form of Durga you are spotless, the giver of happiness and wealth. Whoever meditates on you gains riddhi (prosperity), siddhi (accomplishment) and wealth.
Tum patal-nivasini…You dwell even in the netherworld, and you alone grant what is auspicious. You bring the results of our actions to light and carry us across the ocean of worldly life.
Jis ghar mein tum rahtin…Every virtue comes to the home where you live. Everything becomes possible there, and the mind is never anxious.
Tum bin yagya na hote…Without you no yajna could be performed and no one would have clothes to wear. The richness of food and drink all comes from you.
Shubh-gun mandir sundar…You are a beautiful temple of every good quality, born from the ocean of milk. Without you, no one could have the fourteen jewels.
Mahalakshmi ji ki aarti…Whoever sings Mahalakshmi's aarti finds joy filling the heart, and their sins fall away.

Read together, the verses move from praise to cause and effect. Lakshmi is not only money; she is what makes a yajna possible, puts food on the table and lets the mind rest.

Learn more: what are the fourteen jewels?

The ratna chaturdash are the treasures that rose from the churning of the ocean, the Samudra Manthan. Lakshmi herself was one of them, along with the moon, the wish-granting cow Kamadhenu, and Dhanvantari carrying the pot of amrit.

How to Do the Lakshmi Aarti on Diwali Night

The aarti closes the Lakshmi Puja, so it comes after the naivedya and the worship of Kuber, still inside your city's Diwali puja time on Sunday, 8 November 2026.

  1. Prepare the thali. Place a ghee diya with one or five wicks, a piece of camphor, a few flowers, roli and akshat on the aarti thali. Keep the bell in your left hand.
  2. Let the fragrance settle first. Light the dhoop a few minutes before the aarti, so the room is already scented when the family stands. A dhoop cone suits this moment because it releases fragrance quickly; Shrika dhoop cones work well here, and an incense stick from the same range can stand in the thali through the aarti itself. For the other rooms, the dhoop sticks last longer.
  3. Wave the diya clockwise. The traditional count is four circles at Lakshmi's feet, two at her navel, one at her face, and seven over the whole idol, while the family sings.
  4. Ring the bell throughout and sing every verse, returning to the refrain each time.
  5. Offer the aarti to the family. After the last verse, carry the thali to each person. Everyone passes their palms over the flame and touches them to their eyes and forehead.
  6. Close with pushpanjali. Everyone offers a handful of flowers at Lakshmi's feet together.

The full sequence that comes before the aarti is in the step-by-step Diwali puja vidhi.

Mahalaxmi Aarti vs Om Jai Lakshmi Mata: Are They the Same?

Not quite. Om Jai Lakshmi Mata is the Hindi aarti sung across North India, and its last verse calls itself the Mahalakshmi ji ki aarti, so many people use the two names for the same song.

In Maharashtra, though, "Mahalaxmi aarti" usually means a Marathi aarti to the Devi, sung especially around the Ambabai Mahalakshmi temple in Kolhapur. Many families there also recite the Mahalakshmi Ashtakam, a Sanskrit hymn of eight verses that begins Namastestu Mahamaye. Both belong to the same Devi; the difference is language and regional tradition, not the deity.

The Kolhapur temple keeps its own Diwali tradition: on Amavasya the Devi receives her solah shringar. For families who want a puja there alongside the aarti at home, Ekishwar arranges the Mahalakshmi Dhan Sthirta Nariyal Vidhi at Ambabai on Diwali Amavasya.

Singing the Lakshmi Aarti with Its Meaning in Mind

Om Jai Lakshmi Mata is short enough to learn in one Diwali, and its eight verses carry more than the refrain suggests: three goddesses named as one, Lakshmi as the reason a yajna can happen and food reaches the table, and the fourteen jewels of the Samudra Manthan. Sing it at the end of the Lakshmi Puja, inside your city's muhurat, with a separate diya from the akhand lamp, and let the family take the aarti before the flowers are offered.
